Child custody cases can be extremely emotional. During a divorce, the child’s mother (and the father) often assume the child will be under the custody of the mother. Fathers might not understand that they have as much right to raise their child as the mother.
At the Lund Law Firm, in Riverside, Calif., we advocate equal treatment under the law. In today’s society, many mothers work and many fathers take an active role in raising children, so we believe fathers should have equal rights to child custody.
We have more than 20 years of experience representing fathers in family law and divorce matters, including child custody and visitation. We have helped hundreds of fathers fight for their rights and protect their interests.

The law distinguishes two types of child custody: legal and physical. Legal child custody allows you to make decisions on behalf of your child, such as medical care, religious preferences and education. Physical child custody allows you to choose where your child will physically reside.
Child custody may be joint or sole. Joint child custody means that both parents share custody of the child. Sole child custody means that only one parent has custody of the child.
Absent a valid reason not to, courts typically award joint legal custody but sole physical custody. Courts also typically set a visitation schedule.
For any type of child custody matter, you should retain a family law attorney who is familiar with fathers’ rights and has experience advocating on behalf of fathers. Physical custody and visitation could affect the amount of child support you pay as well as your opportunity to raise your child.
At the Lund Law Firm, we have that experience. We also have experience handling post-divorce motions to modify child custody or visitation schedules after your divorce when doing so is in the best interest of your child or you have experienced a significant change in circumstances.
